A little bit of History of The Gnome
The Scandinavian countries are rich in their folklore. Throughout these countries, you will hear unique stories about mythical creatures such as fairies, trolls and of course Gnomes. Gnomes are not necessarily good or evil, nor are they malicious creatures and hold a special place in the hearts of the locals.
We know these cuties as Gnomes, however they go by many names, depending on where you are. In Sweden Gnomes are known as Tomte, Nisse, in Norway and Tonttu in Finland, but really, they are all Gnomes.
Scandinavian Gnomes are normally small and bearded men and a little mischievous.
The history of the Gnomes probably started in the 1800s and were believed to protect the farmstead and its buildings. This is probable as the farms were isolated and the inhabitants had to live through dark long winters, and possibly Gnomes were the imagination of those isolated to feel less alone during these long winters. In Sweden, “Tomte” means homestead man.
The garden Gnome might have originated from the UK, however it is said that these particular Gnomes, were first found in Germany.
